The Molecular Disk in the Cloverleaf Quasar

چکیده

We propose a new interpretation for the CO emitting region of the Cloverleaf (H1413+1143), a gravitationally lensed QSO. We proceed by fitting a two-galaxy lensing model directly to the IRAM CO(7-6) data rather than to the optical HST image. From the fit we infer that the CO source might be a disk-like structure with a characteristic radius R ≥ 790 pc, a value similar to that of the CO emitting regions present in nearby starburst ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Subject headings: Gravitational lensing — quasars: individual (H1413+1143, Cloverleaf) — radio lines:galaxies

Gas and Dust in the Cloverleaf Quasar at Redshift 2.5

We observed the upper fine structure line of neutral carbon, C I(P2 →P1) (νrest = 809 GHz), the 12CO(J=3→2) line (νrest = 345 GHz) and the 1.2 mm continuum emission from H1413+117 (Cloverleaf quasar, z = 2.5) using the IRAM interferometer. Together with the detection of the lower fine structure line (Barvainis et al. 1997), the Cloverleaf quasar is now only the second extragalactic system, besi...

Resolution and Kinematics of Molecular Gas Surrounding the Cloverleaf Quasar at z=2.6 Using the Gravitational Lens

Gravitational lenses have long been advertised as primitive telescopes, capable of magnifying cosmologically distant sources (Zwicky 1937). In this Letter, we present new, 0.9 resolution CO (7–6) observations of the z = 2.56 Cloverleaf quasar (H 1413+117) and spatially resolved images. By modeling the gravitational lens, we infer a size scale of 0.3 (∼ 1 kpc) for the molecular gas structure sur...

The Warm Molecular Gas around the Cloverleaf Quasar

We present the first broadband λ = 1mm spectrum toward the z = 2.56 Cloverleaf Quasar, obtained with Z-Spec, a 1-mm grating spectrograph on the 10.4-meter Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The 190–305 GHz observation band corresponds to rest-frame 272 to 444 μm, and we measure the dust continuum as well as all four transitions of carbon monoxide (CO) lying in this range. The power-law dust emi...

The study of molecular gas in quasar host galaxies addresses a number of interesting questions pertaining to the hosts' ISM, to unified schemes relating quasars and IR galaxies, and to the processes fueling nuclear activity. In this contribution I review observations of molecular gas in quasar hosts from z = 0.06 to z = 4.7. The Cloverleaf quasar at z = 2.5 is featured as a case where there are...
